THE 4D KAY PROJECT SITE

print
Hi there,

What is this project?

For years I've been a fan of Warhammer 40.000
I know I wasn't the only one.... But as time passed, I began to feel something was wrong. Space Marines were not as powerful as described in the stories. Where one Space Marine should be more than a match for a unit of men, he could be easily slaughtered by a few lowly guardsmen.
Rules were too static and not realistic for my taste. Why should a whole unit flee under enemy fire when one of them was killed? Why would one risk getting stuck in melee, when he has a fantastic firearm?
Why does the IGO-UGO way of playing 40K make the game so static and predictable?
Why is there no fog of war? Why do you have aboslute control, and your minis act as if they had god-like knowledge of the battlefield and enemy positions?

Then 5150 came. With initiative going from one side to another, with soldiers refusing or simply unable to carry on their orders, with leaders being more important than melee butchers. With fire combat working like it should work - with troops being pinned, suppressed, forced into cover, returning fire, and panicking under fire...

What was missing was an adaptation of the excellent world of Warhammer 40K to the rules of 5150.
That's where the project was born...

The project is totally run by fans, is by no means a commercial project, and is not connected to the Two Hour Wargames company.

But what is 5150?

5150 is a miniature wargame from Two Hour Wargames. You can find it at http://www.twohourwargames.com
I think it's worth every cent of its price. It has its own universe but was prepared as a generic wargame, to be easily adapted for other settings.

The game is fast, dynamic, and easy to learn. One may initially feel confused by the way it works, but when you get into it you're not likely to quit. Its rules are surprisingly good at representing realistic reactions in a fast and easy way, but well.. check by yourselves.

If you don't want to spend your money without testing, there are a few free games on their website, which use similar engines. Especially the WW2 game "MG42" and gangsters game "Babyface and me" are worth checking out.

And what is the goal of the project?

The idea is to make the game feel more like the stories. To bring the atmosphere of the dark universe of Warhammer 40K to the game. To make the units act like in the stories, not in the ever-changing rules of Warhammer 40K. War is not balanced, war is not just - and we want to reflect it.

That's why we chose the engine of 5150 which is excellent for representing futuristic combat, and setting of Warhammer 40.000 - which we like so much :)

So who can contribute

EVERYBODY CAN! That's why the project has a form of Wiki. Everybody can register and contribute. Just try to have respect for the work of others and if you edit their pages - add an "edit summary" in the special field to explain what was changed and why. The group of authors grew to several persons and can become even better.

We don't have enough knowledge about all the races and armies, so your help may be valuable. Just bear in mind we don't want to write full codexes - we want to go the 5150 way with 'one or a few pages per army' not a full-blown codex. Well, check what's already done and probably you'll see what we're doing...

And if my concepts differ from yours?

You can add a variant in addition to the rules already present in the wiki and place a note that it's an alternative variant or it's open for discussion. This way people can choose their preferred rules, and we think: the more the merrier. :-D

And then we will see what will become the final 'official' version.
